Steve Cayard - Birchbark Canoe Builder

Maliseet 1st Nation, St. Mary's, Fredericton, NB, Canada, 2009

About the workshop

In 1825 a Maliseet canoe was brought from New Brunswick to Galway, Ireland, where it remained for nearly two hundred years (link), before being returned to Canada for repairs in 2007. This turned out to be the oldest Maliseet canoe in existence, and in its honor a group of Maliseet people, hosted by Wayne Brooks and his family, built a full-size 21-foot reproduction of it with my help, at the Maliseet First Nation at St. Marys. This project, which took 4 weeks, was sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts.
