Steve Cayard - Birchbark Canoe Builder

Denizen 19, 2016

About the canoe

This 19-foot canoe is made with a sheet of exceptionally thick, tough bark, averaging very close to one quarter inch thick. The etching on the winter bark side panels and decks was inspired by a bear that has moved into our neighborhood in recent years. He is flanked by some of his favorite foods. The polypody fern is the first food of the spring, because it grows on boulders, which lose their snow early. The beech nuts are a staple of late fall. Inside beam 30", depth 12", weight 85 lbs.
