Steve Cayard - Birchbark Canoe Builder

Penobscot Marine Museum, Searsport, Maine, 2010

About the workshop

In July 2010 the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine hosted a second birchbark canoe building demonstration. Again a group of Wabanaki canoe builders got together and built another 16-foot canoe with my help. This canoe was sold by the Museum to help fund future birchbark canoe projects, but not before being put through its paces on Penobscot Bay by the crew. The 2009 canoe was still around, so it got into the action as well. All the photos here were taken by Jon Clark.
