Steve Cayard - Birchbark Canoe Builder

Penobscot Nation, Indian Island, Old Town, Maine, 2005

About the workshop

With funding from the National Park Service, this third birchbark canoe workshop at Indian Island consisted of building an 18-foot canoe from start to finish. Participants were involved in finding, gathering, and preparing all the materials from the forest needed for its construction. This was a long-term project, in which the group met at each stage of the process, starting in the fall of 2003 and finishing the canoe in the spring of 2005. Also included in this effort was the assembly of a complete tool kit for birchbark canoe building, to help facilitate such projects in the future.
