Steve Cayard - Birchbark Canoe Builder

Penobscot Nation, Indian Island, Old Town, Maine, 2003

About the workshop

This was the second installment of birchbark canoe building on Indian Island. As before, the woodwork was done by hand outside the centrally located Cultural Building on the grounds of the Indian Island School. In this case the assembly phase was moved indoors. Another beautiful 18-foot Penobscot birchbark canoe was built in 3 weeks by a group of about 12 workshop participants, with the support of the entire community. This project was sponsored by the Maine Arts Commission.
